What is Yin and Yoga Nidra? What are the benefits?
The original purpose of Yin was to prepare the body for long hours of meditation without physical discomfort. Today, being in the west we are accustom to sitting in chairs and desks which creates tightness and restricts flexibility. There are several benefits behind Yin yoga including better range of motion in the joints, increased flexibility in the muscles and a calmer mind.
Poses are held for a longer amount of time to allow the muscles to relax while releasing and lubricating the fascia. Yin is the perfect compliment and creates balance for a Yang practice--whether its a challenging yoga class, running, crossfit or any activity that exerts the muscles. Yin is great for couch potatoes or the athlete.
The overall purpose of Yoga Nidra (sleep) is to release tension and stress from both the body and mind. However, on a deeper level Nidra can be used to rewire mental patterns. This in between state of wakefulness and dream allows us to tap into the depths of the mind. If we can train the mind to relax we can see new possibilities and solutions. The benefits of Yoga Nidra are deep relaxation, awakening the psychic body and even correcting habits or unwanted behaviors. The body sleeps while the mind remains conscious.
I currently teach a Yinful Flow class on Sundays at 10:45am. It is generally a popular class and we get a lot of beginners. All levels are welcome!
I will also be offering a special Yin and Yoga Nidra workshop Friday June 2, 2017.
